Activating Layer2 products takes 3 simple steps only.
No re-installation or configuration changes are required. The existing installations of the evaluation version of the Layer2 product are kept working.
- 1. Send server name(s) to Layer2
- 2. Receive product key from Layer2
- 3. Place the product key on the server(s)
1. Send server name(s)
If you have successfully ordered a Layer2 product license using the web shop, you are asked for your server name(s) by email. Please send us the server name(s) required for your personal product key. You'll find this server names, depending on operating system version, in the computers properties dialoque.

Please take care about absolutely correct spelling and case sensitivity.
2. Receive product key file
If we got the computer name(s) we will generate your personal product key file and deliver it to you per email within 48h (working days). The product key file is attached to your e-mail. It may be zipped. In this case please unzipp the file first. Please check, if the licensor information and all server names are correct. You have to license all web frontend servers.
This file is signed. Please do not modify this file. It becomes invalide in this case. The file name has to be as delivered: productkey.xml.
If not all informations are correct or in case of server names have changed, please contact sales@layer2.de directly. You will receive a new product key file within 48h (working days). The old key file becomes invalide in this case.
3. Place the product key file on server(s)
The product key file has to be placed in the servers file system. Please logon to the server with appropiate access rights. Place the product key file into the solutions directory. There should already be some other files in this directory. The directory you'll find under
%Commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\TEMPLATE\FEATURES\Layer2.Products.Productname
where product name is e.g. "EnhancedUserTasks".
To finaly activate the product an application restart has to be done. Please use the console command IISReset to restart the application. Take care, that the application can become unavailable for a short time during restart.

Some products (e.g. BDLC) additionally require a restart of the SharePoint Timer Service.
Please check, that now there are no demo lables or other limitations of the evaluation version. If so, you have successfuly activated the Layer2 product.
Don't forget to activate all licensed servers.
If there are no changes (solution is still in demo mode), please check server name(s) again. Most problems in case of activations are coursed by invalid server names.
